adhesion adherence of a paint coating to a metal substrate
backing coat paint coat applied to the reverse side of a prepainted metal product, usually of lower specification than the main decorative coat

binder polymer which forms the basis of a paint system - also known as resin
chemcoater a small-scale roller coater used to apply a conversion coating
cladding products used for decorative purposes on the outside of walls, can be either structural or purely decorative
coil a coiled strip of metal, either before or after coating, of a constant width and gauge
coil coating a process for coating a continuous strip of flat metal
conversion coating a chemical coating applied to metal strip to facilitate the adhesion of paint
corrosion process by which a metal degrades through oxidation
curing process of converting a wet paint film into a dry film, usually involving chemical change and polymer cross-linking
DFT dry film thickness - thickness of a paint film once fully dried and cured
domestic appliance electrical goods such as refridgerators, washing machines, dryers, cookers etc.

emboss texture which can be applied to thick paint coatings before they are fully cured
finish coat the top-most paint coat which gives a decorative and protective surface finish

metal strip the continuous strip of flat metal coated in the coil coating operation
no-rinse a type of conversion coating, usually applied by roller coater or squeegee rolls, which does not require subsequent rinsing
pigment a constituent of paint which provides colour and sometimes corosion resistance
plastisol paint type based on a PVC resin
PMT peak metal temperature - the maximum temperature achieved by the metal substrate during the drying/curing process in a coil coating line
polyester resin type used as the basis for many paints used in coil coating
polyurethane resin type used as the basis for some paints used in coil coating
pre-treatment strip cleaning and application of a chemical conversion coating prior to painting on a coil coating line
prepainted metal metal coated using the coil coating process
pretreatment strip cleaning and application of a chemical conversion coating prior to painting on a coil coating line
primer paint coat, usually used under a top-coat, which gives good adhesion and corrosion resistance
PVC polyvinyl chloride - a polymer used as a base for some coil coating paints
PvDF polyvinylidene fluoride - resin used as the basis for some paints used in coil coating
quench process of quickly cooling prepainted metal upon exit from the ovens - usually using either forced air or water

resin polymer which forms the basis of a paint system - also known as binder
reverse cascade rinsing technique used on most coil coating lines to minimise water usage

thermoplastic describes paints which do not chemically cross-link, but fuse when cured - can exhibit plastic properties at elevated temperature
thermoset describes paints which chemically cross-link when cured
top coat the top-most paint coat which gives a decorative and protective surface finish
transport describes the use of metal in cars, lorries, busses, trains, ships etc.
viscosity thickness, particularly of liquid paint - important to ensure even application in coil coating
